I literally could not put this book down。 The author did such a great job captivating my attention and creating the story。 Just as every twist and turn is uncovered something else comes up。 I truly could not have guessed the culprit

Chevy Stevens does it again! Another heart-wrenching thriller with characters you can’t help but love。 Or hate。 In this story, based off a real highway in Northern British Columbia, Stevens has you wondering who you can trust and if you can trust anyone! It’s a small town and everyone knows your business。I loved the friendships, the courage and perseverance, and I especially loved Wolf! I highly recommend this novel! Thank you to Net Galley for the digital ARC!!

Cold Creek Highway doesn't sound like the kind of road that I would choose for a spontaneous road trip。 Located in British Columbia, it is vast, desolate, and dangerous。 Many girls have gone missing over the years。 Hitchhikers or drivers, it doesn't seem to matter to the predators who view it as the perfect hunting spot。Hailey McBride has spent her life in Cold Creek and is well aware of what can happen to someone alone on this highway。 The death of her father leaves her grief-stricken。 She has Cold Creek Highway doesn't sound like the kind of road that I would choose for a spontaneous road trip。 Located in British Columbia, it is vast, desolate, and dangerous。 Many girls have gone missing over the years。 Hitchhikers or drivers, it doesn't seem to matter to the predators who view it as the perfect hunting spot。Hailey McBride has spent her life in Cold Creek and is well aware of what can happen to someone alone on this highway。 The death of her father leaves her grief-stricken。 She has to leave the home she loves, full of memories of her father behind, and move in with her Aunt Lana and her husband Vaughn。 His job with the police should make Hailey feel safe, but his actions say something else。 Soon, she feels her only option is to run away。 But a young girl going missing in Cold Creek can only lead to one conclusion。 Hailey must be another victim of the highway killer。Beth Chevalier comes to Cold Creek to attend a memorial service and find out who killed her sister, Amber。 She decides to stay in town and discovers not everyone is telling the truth。 She doesn't intend to put Hailey at risk, but the truth has a way of bubbling to the surface, and soon their fates will bring them together。I don't want to spoil the journey for anyone, but I will say that this heartbreaking story grabbed me from the first page and wouldn't let go。 A compelling mystery and characters that I kept crossing my fingers that nothing bad would happen to the ones I cared about。 Hailey and Wolf had my heart, and I came close to feeling the same way about Beth。 I wish the inspiration for this book wasn't based on a true story。 I wish the world was a better place。 I don't wish that I hadn't read this unforgettable book。 。。。more

Chevy Stevens's Dark Roads is set in the wilderness and rugged terrain of British Columbia, along a highway where unsuspecting women traveling alone go missing from time to time--yet a predator never ends up being brought to justice。Teen Hailey McBride learned from her father how to be self-sufficient--to hunt, to camp, to stay tough, and to never drive Cold Creek Highway by herself。 Now that he's gone, she's grieving--and she's at the mercy of Vaughn, her aunt's controlling husband, a police of Chevy Stevens's Dark Roads is set in the wilderness and rugged terrain of British Columbia, along a highway where unsuspecting women traveling alone go missing from time to time--yet a predator never ends up being brought to justice。Teen Hailey McBride learned from her father how to be self-sufficient--to hunt, to camp, to stay tough, and to never drive Cold Creek Highway by herself。 Now that he's gone, she's grieving--and she's at the mercy of Vaughn, her aunt's controlling husband, a police officer on a power trip。 When she suspects that Vaughn is paying too much attention to her, Hailey decides to lay the groundwork for running away and to disappear into the wild。 When she's eighteen she hopes to emerge, out from under others' thumbs。 What Hailey doesn't anticipate is that the community will assume she's been taken by the highway killer, which they do。 But now she's stuck。 She can't return to her aunt's, and for a time the book is satisfyingly focused on her survival skills and her bonding with a young dog while she determines her next move。 This section was my favorite part of the book。Meanwhile, Beth Chevalier arrives in Cold Creek to try to figure out what happened to her sister Amber, who vanished in the area。 Beth becomes a potential target herself--while also inadvertently drawing attention to the truth about Hailey's disappearance。I quickly became frustrated with Beth's careless, repeated, willfully risky behavior in what she clearly knows--after the loss of her sister--to be a potentially deadly situation。 She's grieving and coping with substance abuse issues, but it was difficult watching her repeatedly lose control of her faculties and surrender her ability to protect herself when she knows how crucial it is to do so。The bad guys in Dark Roads feel full-bore evil and overwhelmingly pervasive; in one case we see little evidence of redeeming qualities, which makes it feel too easy to wholeheartedly despise the character at hand (in another case, the matter involves more gray areas)。 The horrific abuses of power, toxic masculinity, and the disturbing, predatory serial killing in the book may make you angry enough to want to spit nails, which is how I felt。In Dark Roads, characters figure out their places in the world, find internal strength when they need it, and learn to start to let go of what's weighing them down。 Some elements felt too easy--certain characters' vulnerabilities seem destined to lead to tragedy and made me want to shout warnings I felt they shouldn't need--but the book was atmospheric, and the characters' friendship and loyalty (and, sometimes, selfishness) that Stevens explores kept me engaged。 Stevens's fictional Cold Creek Highway setting is based on the real-life "Highway of Tears" in British Columbia, where women have gone missing since the 1970s, and where a disproportionate number of Indigenous women have been abducted。 Many of these missing-person cases remain tragically unsolved。I received a prepublication digital copy of this title courtesy of St。 Martin's Press and NetGalley。I found some commonalities between Dark Roads and another suspenseful read I recently read and was engrossed in, Wendy Walker's Don't Look for Me, especially regarding the villains of both stories。To see my full review on The Bossy Bookworm, or to find out about Bossy reviews and Greedy Reading Lists as soon as they're posted, please see Dark Roads。Find hundreds of reviews and lots of roundups of my favorite books on the blog: Bossy BookwormFollow me on Instagram! @bossybookwormblogOr Facebook! I gave this book 5 ⭐️ because it is loosely based on the Highway of Tears out of British Columbia。 I have followed the disappearances of many of these women for as long as I can remember。 Thank you to Chevy Stevens for doing this story justice and creating characters that the reader can truly love and get invested in。 Dark Roads is twisty, suspenseful, and scary as hell because its based on true events that have gone unsolved for decades。

A 4 star book for me。 Might have been 5 stars but the middle dragged。 My favorite character was,,,…WOLF! The twist at the end was good but I was suspicious! I also had no idea this was YA book。 Is it? Characters seemed wise beyond their years especially when using their survival skills。

Another excellent thriller from Chevy Stevens。 Couldn’t put it down。 You can picture the run down mill town that serves as the backdrop for this back woods murder mystery。 Suspense builds from page one and doesn’t let up until the end。 This one was just as good as her best seller, Still Missing。

Based on the synopsis, I expected Dark Roads would be a hope run for me。 While this book is described as a “breathtaking thriller” and the prologue about the Cold Creek Highway killer was gripping, the pacing, dialogue, and characters missed the mark。 In the first part of the book, Hailey has moved in with her aunt, uncle and cousin after her father’s tragic death。 Hailey’s uncle Vaughn is a police officer who is extremely strict and is constantly watching, following, and threatening her。 After Based on the synopsis, I expected Dark Roads would be a hope run for me。 While this book is described as a “breathtaking thriller” and the prologue about the Cold Creek Highway killer was gripping, the pacing, dialogue, and characters missed the mark。 In the first part of the book, Hailey has moved in with her aunt, uncle and cousin after her father’s tragic death。 Hailey’s uncle Vaughn is a police officer who is extremely strict and is constantly watching, following, and threatening her。 After Hailey discovers a dark and disturbing secret about Vaughn, she decides to run away to live in the mountains。 This is when I started to lose interest in the book, it became too unbelievable to keep my attention。 A seventeen year old girl running away into the wilderness with only her dog just didn’t seem plausible to me。 The second part of the book follows Beth as she arrives in Cold Creek to find out more about her sister Amber’s murder。 This isn’t a bad book, the storyline was intriguing but the execution and characters weren’t enough to hold my attention。 Based on the reviews, it looks like mine is an unpopular opinion so check this one out if you enjoy slow burn survival stories。 Thank you to Netgalley and St。 Martin’s Press for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I loved, loved, loved this fast-paced, thrilling novel about a small town in British Columbia and its highway - the Cold Creek Highway - in which dozens of girls have gone missing and been found dead。 Stevens explores themes of violence against women, dirty cops, grief and loss, and so much more, all set against the backdrop of a small rural town with lots of trauma and issues of its own。 I don't even want to try to provide a teaser or summary, because trying to lay out all of the relationships I loved, loved, loved this fast-paced, thrilling novel about a small town in British Columbia and its highway - the Cold Creek Highway - in which dozens of girls have gone missing and been found dead。 Stevens explores themes of violence against women, dirty cops, grief and loss, and so much more, all set against the backdrop of a small rural town with lots of trauma and issues of its own。 I don't even want to try to provide a teaser or summary, because trying to lay out all of the relationships can get a little confusing。 But once you're immersed in the town of Cold Creek, with its hardworn cast of characters, you won't be able to put this down。 I read this nonstop until I was 75% of the way through and had to stop because it was 1 am - then I finished it quickly the next morning。 The action is really what drew me in and kept me hooked; Stevens has such a great way of setting up an intense situation and writing compelling scenes of wilderness survival, predator/prey, stalking, and a perpetrator with his victims。 Both of the main female protagonists, Hailey and Beth, are characters that you root for, despite them being so different from each other。 You hate the villains and love the heroes, just as you're supposed to。 Overall, this was a super fast-paced, entertaining, thrilling read - I highly recommend it。 Thank you to St。 Martin's Press for the ARC via Netgalley! 。。。more
